Control Link for DJI Focus Pro Hand Unit

Functionality + Limitations

The new DJI Focus Pro Hand Unit (2024) communicates in the same way as the previous gen DJI 3-Channel Follow Focus Hand Unit (2023).

The DJI High-Bright Remote Monitor doesn't know the difference between the two.

Focus / Iris / Zoom all work with Ronin 4D, and Focus / Iris for Inspire 3. The DJI website and user manual mention Focus OR Zoom only... which is not very helpful...

Disappointingly, at this point in time (August 2024), both DJI Hand Units do NOT communicate with the new standalone DJI Focus Pro Motors via DJI Transmission.

"The DJI Hand Units can only connect to the Focus Pro Motors via their internal 2.4GHz radio bands."

The range is rated at 100m (CE) / 450ft (FCC) — nowhere near the range capability of DJI Transmission!

We have lobbied DJI to resolve this limitation with new firmware as it seems wild to block your flagship products from playing nicely together. DJI could easily change this with a few lines of code!

Other Notes

When using CANBUSTER, or Control Deck, with Inspire 3, you will require Control Link if you want a 1st AC to operate a separate hand unit for FIZ. Why? Because only one High-Bright Remote Monitor can connect to the Inspire 3.

The DJI Monitor Holder has several drawbacks. Here are some Control Link benefits:

Control Link allows the High-Bright Monitor cage to remain on. This means you can mount the hood and 3rd party battery plates.

Secondly, it is more comfortable operating with a monitor at eye height, and a Hand Unit at arm height. Improving your body's comfort during long days on set.

New ¼”-20 Bolt

After some testing, it became apparent that DJI slightly changed the ¼”-20 thread depth on the new DJI Focus Pro Hand Unit.

This means the ¼”-20 bolt that shipped with Control Link before the 19th of April 2024, is too long :(

We have machined a batch of ¼” bolts so all new Control Links will work with both DJI hand units.

For the customers who need the new shorter bolt, we are happy to throw one in with any new order. Just make a note on checkout or email Tom Waugh sales@ignitedigi.com.au after you've ordered.

The second option is to add an M5 Nylon washer that is 10mm in diameter or smaller. Insert the washer under the bolt head and you’ll be good to go! 🔥
